Plant Cell Lines

Undifferentiated plant cell cultures are widely used for basic and applied research, for elucidation of biosynthetical pathways, production of secondary metabolites and as screening tools for pharmacy, food technology and agrochemistry. The main function of the DSMZ plant cell culture collection is to collect and deliver plant cell cultures with relevance to biotechnology, fundamental and applied research.

At present the DSMZ collection maintains more than 700 different plant cell lines from more than 80 different plant families with priority to dicotyledoneous angiosperms. The collection consists of a large number of cell lines derived from secondary metabolite producing plant species. Most of the cell lines are maintained in the living state as calli. For monitoring stability of cell lines secondary metabolite fingerprints by HPLC or GC, DNA fingerprints and RAPD technology are available.

In addition the department offers services to the scientific community like:

initiation of cell cultures from plant material

initiation of suspension cultures from callus

development and/or performance of cryopreservation procedures

DSMZ offers facilities for safe deposit and acts as an IDA (International Depository Authority) for the patent deposit under the Budapest treaty.

In the past the plant cell line department participated in several international cooperative research projects funded by "Bioversity International" ("Refinement of cryopreservation techniques for potato") or the EU (CRYMCEPT, Reference: QLK5-CT-2002-01279 and COST Action 871, "Cryopreservation of crop species in Europe"). Presently the dapartment participates in COST Action FA1103 "Endophytes in Biotechnology and Agriculture"
