The Chicken intestinal Bacterial Collection
Although chickens are very important domestic animals, knowledge about their gut microbial communities is still scant. Studying microbes and their interactions with the immune system via a combination of cultivation and sequencing techniques open new avenues of research and applications to help addressing environmental issues and animal wellbeing. The present cultivation work allowed the establishment of a collection of 43 publicly available bacterial species spanning four phyla and 19 families, including the first cultured members of three novel genera and four novel species that were taxonomically described. Based on this collection, first steps were taken towards the development of synthetic bacterial communities usable as starter microbiota for newly hatched chickens.
