established from an explanted lung tumor which was removed from a 58-year-old man in 1972; model for alveolar type II pulmonary epithelium; cells were originally described in the literature to induce tumors in athymic mice; later described as squamous-type carcinoma; widely used and extensively characterized cell line (see ref 40398 and Cellosaurus:Expasy); listed in the NCI cancer cell line panel and in the CCLE (ref 18232)
