Origin:
the cell line KB-3-1 was established as subclone of the parental KB cell line, which itself is infact a HELA subclone (shown by STR analysis). Cell line KB-3-1 was used to establish several drug resistance subclones, like the multidrug-resistant KB-V1 (DSMZ ACC 149) resistant to vinblastine. KB-3-1 is kept in the open collection of DSMZ as parental clone of KB-V1 and the original HELA as DSMZ ACC 57

Risk assessment:
The cell line is infected with papilloma virus type 18 (HPV-18). The cells contain several copies as proviruses integrated into the eukaryotic genome. The integrated virus genomes are incomplete and exhibit 2-3 kb deletions of the E2-L2 region. An activation and transmission of the HPV-18 during handling of the cell line is improbable. The cell line is categorized biosafety level 1.
