Origin:
the cell line HELA-S3 is an early subclone of HELA. It was established in 1955 by single cell cloning of the parental HELA cell line and is described to exhibit a more uniform morphology than the parental cell line; the cells were further described to can be grown in suspension (but no more in our hands). The original HELA is available as DSMZ ACC 57

Risk assessment:
The cell line is infected with papilloma virus type 18 (HPV-18). The cells contain several copies as proviruses integrated into the eukaryotic genome. The integrated virus genomes are incomplete and exhibit 2-3 kb deletions of the E2-L2 region. An activation and transmission of the HPV-18 during handling of the cell line is improbable. The cell line is categorized biosafety level 1.

harvest of about 7-10 x 106 cells/80 cm2 flask

Authenticity:
STR analysis according to the global standard ANSI/ATCC ASN-0002.1-2021 (2021) resulted in an authentic STR profile of HELA cell line in the reference STR database.
