PK-15
ACC 640
Cell line:
PK-15
DSMZ no.:
ACC 640
Species:
porcine (pig) (Sus scrofa)
Cell type:
kidney
Origin:
derived by single-cell cloning of the parent cell line PK-2a in 1957, which was established in 1955 from the kidney of an adult pig; cells were shown to carry an endogenous C-type retrovirus and to be susceptible to various viruses, e.g. viruses causing Hog cholera, African swine fever, and foot and mouth disease
Biosafety level:
1
Risk assessment:
The cell line releases Porcine type-C oncoviruses (PCOV). In Germany, these viruses are classified BSL 1 regarding men and BSL 2 relating to animals (TRBA 462). However, the German Central Committee on Biological Safety (ZKBS) classified these viruses and infected cell lines BSL 2 when they are used for genetically modifying applications (Ref. 6790-10-65).
