Coleofasciculus microbiome
Filamentous cyanobacteria of the genus Coleofasciculus are the most important primary producer of marine microbial mats. The worldwide largest collection of usually non-axenic cultures is deposited at the DSMZ. Superior resolution 16S-ITS profiling and metagenome sequencing revealed a great diversity of stably associated bacteria (Marter et al. 2025). The hidden biodiversity in these microbiomes ranges from as yet uncultivated species up to the phylum level. A first isolation campaign resulted in 15 bacterial isolates from the culture of Coleofasciculus sp. DSM 104231 (= WW12).
