Culture Collection of Maize Root-Associated Bacteria

The ZeaMiC (Zea mays Microbial Collection) collection is a publicly available, fully genome sequenced culture collection of bacteria associated with maize (Zea mays) roots. This resource comprises 88 fully genome sequenced, isolates sourced from diverse soils and maize genotypes, specifically selected based on their abundance on maize roots, phylogenetic diversity, and potential functional importance.

This collection was designed to represent the core microbiome previously described for maize grown in prairie and agricultural soils from the US Corn Belt (Swift et al. (2025)), and supplemented it with previously described isolates from maize grown in Swiss agricultural soils (Thoenen et al. (2023)), US horticultural soils (Niu et al. (2017)), and United Kingdom and Cape Verde agricultural soils (Custódio et al., (2025)).
