Within the DZIF Pathogen Repository, quality-controlled bacterial strains are made available for use in science and research.

The collection can store further relevant microorganisms free of charge at any time.
In addition to deposit in the public collection, there is also the possibility of safety deposit or deposit in special DZIF collections that are not public.
The Leibniz Institute DSMZ-German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures in Braunschweig is the central depository for pathogens and microbial drug producers at the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF).

The DSMZ has an extensive collection of pathogenic microorganisms, e.g. Borrelia, Chlamydia, Legionella.
There are also some very well characterized special collections:
The DSMZ offers special collections containing multiresistant strains and negative control strains.
- ESBL (E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae subsp. pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa)
- MRSA (Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus)
- Vancomycin resistant enterococci
Mouse models with defined bacterial strains are of great importance for gastrointestinal microbial research.
In cooperation with the RTWH Aachen, the Leibniz Institute DSMZ provides a collection of bacteria isolated from the intestinal tract of mice by Prof. Thomas Clavel and colleagues. Currently, more than 100 strains are available and the collection is continuously being expanded.
Pigs are invaluable animals in both biomedical research and agriculture. The gut microbiota, i.e. the communities of microorganisms in their intestine, play a very important role in regulating their health.
In cooperation with RTWH Aachen, the Leibniz Institute DSMZ provides a collection of bacteria isolated from the intestinal tract of pigs by Prof. Thomas Clavel and colleagues.
In collaboration with the DZIF Infrastructure Natural Drug Library, the Leibniz Institute DSMZ offers a set of indicator strains for screening for anti-infective effects of new drug candidates.
