Microbiome & Collective Deposits

In recent years, technological advances and a growing scientific interest in microbiomes (the entire microbial community of a specific environment), have led to high-throughput cultivation attempts and the resultant collection of hundreds of strains derived from a single environment of interest.
These microbial collections have scientific value for the research community because it is assumed that these strains function together in their native environments. As such the DSMZ has made a strategic decision to now also accept bulk deposits of these strains if they meet defined standards.

The following criteria are used by the DSMZ to decide whether a bulk deposit of strains is feasible:

  • Strains are described in an accepted publication in a high-impact factor journal
  • The accepting journal editor recommends or requires deposit of the strains in a public collection
  • Uniqueness (e.g., habitat, phylogenetic novelty)
  • Microbiomes originating from model organisms
  • Genome sequence availability
  • Strains should have <70% digital DDH similarity as calculated using the Genome to Genome Distance Calculator (GGDC) or <96% ANI (average nucleotide identity) to each other (i.e., should not be redundant within the collection).

If you believe your collection meets the criteria above, please contact the Head of the Microorganisms Department explaining (in writing) the publication status and the scientific importance of the strain collection.

If the collection is accepted, please be prepared to provide accompanying documentation for the entire collection (e.g., media used, strain cultivation conditions, etc.) and plan to ship the strains in single tubes on dry ice (no microplates) for -80° C storage.

Bulk deposits should NOT use the individual accession form on the deposit website but will receive a bulk deposit form (excel file) to fill out.

Bulk deposit in the open collection is free of charge but subject to the regulations of the Nagoya Protocol and the Convention on Biological Diversity where applicable. Strains deposited in this manner will be made publicly accessible and distributed to the international scientific community according to our Standard Terms and Conditions and the ECCO Transfer agreement.
