Prokaryotic Nomenclature Up-to-Date (PNU) was a compilation of all names of Bacteria and Archaea which have been validly published according to the Bacteriological Code since
1. Jan. 1980, and nomenclatural changes which have been validly published since. It was updated with the publication of each new issue of the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology (IJSEM). In February 2020 PNU the List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (LPSN) was transferred to DSMZ. The new LPSN established at DSMZ superseded PNU.
How to access LPSN
The new LPSN page offers hierarchical and alphabetic browsing of prokaryotic names and has an advanced search facility. Alternatively, you may go to LPSN Downloads and select one of the lists in CSV or Excel format. Additionally, content can be retrieved in machine readable JSON format by the LPSN web service (API).
How to cite LPSN or PNU
For citing LPSN please see the LPSN page. PNU is not updated any longer. The Approved Lists (Skerman et al., 1980) contain more than 2200 names at the genus level and below and 124 names of higher taxa. Validation Lists and taxon descriptions in the IJSB/IJSEM have been published regularly since. The total number of validly published names of prokaryotes increased considerably since then, see LPSN.
