Prokaryotic Nomenclature Up-to-Date (PNU) is a compilation of all names of Bacteria and Archaea which have been validly published according to the Bacteriological Code since
1. Jan. 1980, and nomenclatural changes which have been validly published since. It will be updated with the publication of each new issue of the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology (IJSEM). In February 2020 PNU was merged with the List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (LPSN).
The new LPSN page offers hierarchical and alphabetic browsing of prokaryotic names and has an advanced search facility. Alternatively, you may go to Downloads and select one of the lists in PDF or Excel format. Additionally, content can be retrieved in machine readable XML and JSON format by the PNU web service.
For citing LPSN please see the LPSN page. If you use the Excel or PDF download or the PNU API; please cite it as: Leibniz Institute DSMZ-German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures GmbH, Germany, Prokaryotic Nomenclature Up-to-date [month and year of the last update].
A more detailed overview of the mechanisms of valid publication of a name according to the Bacteriological Code can be found at LPSN, see also taxonomy & systematics and deposit of a proposed type strain.
The Approved Lists (Skerman et al., 1980) contain more than 2200 names at the genus level and below and 124 names of higher taxa. Validation Lists and taxon descriptions in the IJSB/IJSEM have been published regularly since. The total number of validly published names of prokaryotes increased considerably since then, see LPSN.

Prokaryotic Nomenclature Up-to-Date was established at the DSMZ by Norbert Weiss, Manfred Kracht and Dorothea Gleim. After a reconstruction of the service, PNU is now maintained by Privatdozent Dr. Markus Göker and a team of curators and computer scientists.
