M.Sc. Thesis positions

The junior research group "Microbial Biotechnology" at the Leibniz-Institut DSMZ-German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures GmbH in Braunschweig, Germany, is offering a MSc thesis topic for students who are interested in environmental microbiology and molecular biology:

Characterization of novel amidases from biopurification systems

On-farm biopurification systems are used to clean up highly-contaminated water after pesticide spraying. These systems contain microorganisms that are highly-adapted to degrade recalcitrant compounds, and can be used for bioremediation purposes. One of the target compounds are phenlyurea compounds that are of special interest because of their toxicity. These unfortunately are frequently present in surface and groundwater as pollutants. The MSc thesis aims to characterize the phenylurea amidases from two new organisms from on-farm biopurification systems.

Students that take part in the project will get hands-on experience in cloning, recombinant expression and protein purification as well as analytics and bioinformatics. We are looking for highly-motivated students with a good theoretical knowledge of molecular biology, and with an interest in environment-oriented research. The everyday work language is English.
