Evolutionary basis of bacterial diversity - mechanisms of genome evolution, speciation and niche separation

Bacteria and archaea are genetically, phylogenetically and physiologically very diverse. In contrast to human pathogens from the clinical habitat, little is known of the evolutionary mechanisms that lead to discrete lineages, their niche separation and genetic isolation within natural bacterial communities. Freshwater planktonic sphingomonads, the marine Roseobacter-clade, aquatic Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the terrestrial Bacillus simplex have been selected as model groups for our studies of bacterial population structure.  

Bacterial adaptations to nutrient and energy limitation and implications for biogeochemical cycles

Nutrient and energy limitation prevail in most ecosystems, in which bacterial communities are structured by the specific adaptation mechanisms to starvation survival and oligotrophy. We study bacterial community composition and specific adaptation mechanisms of relevant bacterial groups in selected low-energy and oligotrophic ecosystems. more

Evolution, ecophysiology and molecular basis of bacterial multicellularity

Recent studies challenge the concept of a largely independent metabolism of individual bacterial cells under natural conditions. Phototrophic consortia and multicellular magnetotactic prokaryotes represent the most extreme cases of mutual interdependence of bacterial cells. Using these model systems, the evolution, ecophysiology and molecular basis of heterologous and homologous bacterial multicellulatory are investigated.  more

Provision and Mobilization of prokaryotic metadata for next-generation biodiversity analyses

Within the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) the Leibniz-Institute DSMZ constitutes the node Bacteria & Archaea. DSMZ currently provides over 19,500 records of more than 8,200 species. These data is also available on the internet portal BacDive - The Bacterial Metadatabase. Within the BMBF-funded project for mobilization and digitization of prokaryotic metadata, a comprehensive source of taxon-associated metadata of bacterial and archaeal strains is established. more
