New Look, New Features: LPSN’s Next Evolution

We are delighted to introduce the newly redesigned LPSN website. The fresh layout follows the shared DSMZ Digital Diversity design and was brought to life by Joaquim Sardà, who built it on a template prepared by Julia Koblitz.

This step is another milestone in the ongoing development of the database. Earlier this year, the database included the latest German risk group classification (TRBA), providing more comprehensive information on microbial safety. The updated LPSN API supplies version numbers and, when available, uses DOIs to generate stable, citable URLs. In May 2026, the database has also reached a new milestone of more than 60,000 names and now contains information on all genus rank homonyms from the Catalogue of Life. It has been adapted to the 2025 revision of the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes (ICNP).
Last but not least, since January 2026 LPSN is recognized as an ELIXIR Core Data Resource, underscoring its importance for the European life science community.

Explore the new, user friendly design and take advantage of the expanded features that make researching microbial diversity easier than ever.
