TriMic – A New Resource for Studying Wheat Microbe Interactions

The TriMic project provides the first comprehensive, taxonomically and functionally diverse collection of bacteria that live on wheat (Triticum aestivum) roots. Each strain in this collection has been characterized, and high quality genome sequences are available, revealing genes that help the microbes colonize plants, cycle nutrients and promote growth.
In addition to the strain collection, the researchers have established a simplified synthetic community (SynCom) that contains a limited number of well understood strains. This reduced complexity community allows scientists to study plant microbe relationships under controlled conditions, making it easier to pinpoint the molecular mechanisms behind beneficial interactions.
Together, the TriMic collection, its genome data, and the SynCom form a powerful toolbox for mechanistic research. By enabling detailed studies of how wheat interacts with its microbiome, the resource aims to accelerate the development of microbe based biostimulants that can boost crop yields and support sustainable agriculture.
All TriMic strains and their genome sequences are publicly accessible through the DSMZ catalogue and the NCBI database.
