MALDI-TOF MS (matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry) allows the species identification and clustering of bacteria, yeasts and fungi by mass spectra of large biomolecules (mainly ribosomal proteins). This method is automated, fast, cost-efficient and suited for high-throughput routine analyses.
Required material: A living culture of the strain and information on its optimal cultivation on agar plates.
