established from the malignant primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) of a 42-year-old HIV+ man at diagnosis (prior to therapy) with a previous history of Kaposi's sarcoma; cells were shown to carry the human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), but not the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and not the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

Risk assessment:
The cell line carries HHV-8 sequences which were detected by PCR and Southern blot. We did not determine the infection mode of this herpes virus and cannot exclude the secretion of the viruses. The cell line is thus categorized biosafety level 2.

Subculture:
split saturated culture 1:2 to 1:3 every second day; seed out at ca. 0.3 x 106 cells/ml; maintain at ca. 0.2-0.3 x 106 cells/ml; maximal density at ca. 0.6 x 106 cells/ml (maximal density should not be exceeded); initially after thawing, the viability may drop to as low as 30-40% for about 1-2 weeks
