Risk assessment:
The cell line carries human herpesvirus 4 sequences (HHV-4, Epstein-Barr virus, EBV) which were detected by PCR. Additionally, expression of immediate-early protein BZLF-1 was detected by western blot after stimulating the cells with phorbol ester / sodium butyrate. The infection was classified as potentially lytic associated with a possible production of active viruses. A transmission of EBV during handling of the cells is possible and the cell line is therefore classified biosafety level 2.
